Olympia Land Estate: Avgoustiatis

Olympia Land Estate – Avgoustiatis: A Rare Greek Red Wine

The Avgoustiatis grape thrives at the foot of Kronios Hill, in the heart of the Kladeos River valley, Ancient Olympia. At an altitude of 60 meters, the limestone, sandy, and clay-rich soils, combined with the unique microclimate, create the perfect conditions for its cultivation.

During summer, the temperature difference of 10-15°C between day and night helps the grapes ripen slowly. The cool Ionian breeze and the northwestern winds sweeping through the valley contribute to maintaining their exceptional quality.

We cultivate Avgoustiatis on 6 hectares, strictly controlling the yield at 500-600 kg per hectare. Production is limited: only 2,500-3,000 bottles per year, and only in the best growing seasons.

Nature poses its challenges – wild boars love the juicy Avgoustiatis grapes! However, we remain dedicated to quality, carefully selecting the ripest grapes by hand through multiple vineyard passes. Harvest takes place from late September to early October, when the grapes reach optimal ripeness.

Winemaking: Precision & Passion

The vinification of Avgoustiatis requires patience and precision. The maceration lasts over 25 days, with alcoholic fermentation occurring alongside the grape skins.

The wine then ages for 18 months in carefully selected French and Austrian oak barrels (Bertomieum 225L & Stockinger 500L), enhancing its depth and complexity.

Through frequent tastings and blending, we create the ideal composition before bottling. The Avgoustiatis of Ktima Olympia Gi is bottled under the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Ilia, showcasing the uniqueness and quality of our region.

Another suggestion for this week from WineTrails

ΑSSYRTIKO 2019

From those cases of Assyrtika that lay the foundations for the bright continental future of the variety. A well-crafted set with depth and power. It has a variety of aromas of white stone fruits such as peach and quince, citrus elements such as lemon wrapped in a thin fresh dough. Intense, exuberant but also refreshing, it impresses with the strength and the overall balance they cover that do not sweat in front of its 15 alcoholic degrees.
